Day 1 - Saturday, November 7, 2020 - Recap

The first day competition for the 80th running of the National Retriever Championship started at 7:27 am with our first running dog #1 FC-AFC Rimfires Once Inna Blue Moon, “Blue” to tackle the first series that was Land Triple with Roosters, 2 Dead and 1 Flyer. This series started with 59 dogs out of the 60 dogs that entered. Dog #56 FC-AFC Glade Creek’s Lonestar Dreamcatcher, “Mandy” scratched. This test produced 12 no bird/re-runs. Dog #8 FC-AFC Tanks For The Magic, “Maggie” had a break and dog #21 FC Field Of Dreams All Bets Are On, “Betsy” had a handle. Our last running dog for this series was #20 FC-AFC Kirkwood’s Blue Grade Lady, “Gracie” ending at 1:52 pm. The test took approximately 6 hours 25 minutes per dog which averages out to 6.5 minutes per dog.

Callbacks came out with 58 dogs coming back to the 2nd Series and 1 dog #8 dropped. Dog #16 FC-AFC Keeno’s Ringo, “Ringo” would start the 2nd Series.

We made a quick switch for the 2nd Series, Land Blind that was in the same area as the first series. The judges warned that any dog who went past the stakes would be out of site. It was also announced that dog #20 would run out of order since he was the last dog to complete the last series.

This Land Blind started with 58 dogs and was a quick moving test, averaging about 2 minutes per dog. The test started at 2:26 pm and was completed 2 hours later at 4:26 pm, which also concluded our first day. 

The callbacks came back quickly with all 58 dogs being called back to the 3rd series that would start tomorrow, Sunday, November 8th with test dogs being called to the line at 6:30 am with the first running dog #31 FC Truline’s Fire In The Hole, “Fire” being called after the test dogs are finished.

Callbacks To The 3rd Series

58 dogs were called back to the 3rd Series: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 57, 58, 59 and 60.

dogs were dropped.

Test dogs with be called to the line at 6:30 am with the first running dog #31 right after.




Conclusion of 2nd Series & Recap

The 2nd Series - Land Blind started with 58 dogs. The first running dog #16 came to the line at approximately 2:26 pm.

The judges warned that if the dog goes past the stakes it will be out of the sight.

It was also announced that dog 20 would run out of order since it just finished the last series due to a no bird.

This test was a fast moving test with some really great dog work. We completed it at 4:26 pm with dog #15.

It only took 2 hours to complete this series which averages to be approximately 2 minutes per dog.

Stanley took 1 whistle to get through the slot, then 1 more in the middle with 2 whistles to get around the grass and a final one at the end.

Percy took 2 casts to get through the slot, and 1 in the middle with the last 2 coming in the grass to the bird.

Mavis's initial line was short. She took 3 whistles to get through the slot and another 4 to get the bird.

Chester's initial line went half way to the slot. he took 3 whistles to get past it which carried him to a check down blow at the end.

Polly's initial line went almost to the second bale. She got 2 whistles that brought her to her bird.

Glide's initial line was short. He got 2 whistles to get through the slot, 1 more to the bird and 1 check down at the bird.

Maci's initial line went half way to the slot. Getting 2 whistles to get through it, she got 1 more at the second hay bale, then another one to get into the cover and a check down for the bird.

4. FC Three Rivers Soaring High, "Hawk" BLM, Andrew Curtis

Hawk received 2 casts and passed on the right side of the bale. He carried this line to the end with a check down blow.

Southern Translation

Here is something for all of you that are not from the South. Tommy Parrish shared this with us all in 2017 and we thought it would help again this year.

Translation Book – Southern to English

Fixin’ to – about to start, as in “We are fixin’ to begin the trial”

Hankerin’ for – desire or craving, as in “I have a hankerin’ for a snack”

Honky-tonk – a bar or local establishment

Lick – (noun) any amount at all, as in “I didn’t get a lick of sleep last night”

Babe's initial line went through the first slot, then she took 1 cast to get past the second bale, with 1 more cast to get to the bird.

Sonic's initial line was short. He took 2 cast to get through the first bale and tow more to the blind.

Ringo's initial line went through the slot then right of the bale. He got a left cast then a right cast to the bird.


Series Two - Info

 Dog #20 will run out of order since he just completed his first series at the end of test.

Also the judges gave a warning that any dog who runs beyond the stakes will be out of sight.

Test Dog Two - FC-AFC LJ’s Renaissance Queen; “Bess” handled by Mark Littlejohn

Bess took three whistles to get through the slot by the first bale and two more to climb the hill to her bird.

Test Dog One - Razor’s Buckshot; “Shooter” owned and handled by Larry Vaske

Shooter took 2 whistles to adjust the line by the first hay bale. He then drove the hill to the bird.

2nd Series - Land Blind

Test Two is a land blind close to the First Series. The mat was moved about 15 feet to the left and angled out across the field to the southwest. The line to the bird takes the dog on an angle down the side of the hill through two strips of cover. There is a hay bale at the base of the hill. To the left of the bale is a piece of broom straw and just left of that is a clump of limbs. The line takes the dog close to the bale and ideally between the broom sage and bale. They then proceed to the right of the next hay bale and out to the clump of brush 208 yards from the line. The test is taking a little over one minute per dog.

1 dog was dropped: #8

Dog #56 scratched.

Our first running dog for the 2nd Series is #16.



Conclusion of Series One Recap

The 1st Series Land Triple with Roosters, 1 Flyer and 2 Dead is in the books at 1:52 pm with dog #20's rerun to finish the test.

With 60 dogs entered in the 80th running of the National Retriever Club Championship, we had one scratching, we started with 59 competing dogs! Congrats to all the dogs who qualified!

The day with Bess, our female test dog at 6:58 am. She got a no bird and went back to in the blind and came right back out at 6:59 am for her test. It took Bess 6 minutes 28 seconds to complete the test. She had to get a few whistles from handler Mark Littlejohn. Our second test dog Shooter with handler Larry Vaske came to the line at 7:06 am. It took them 5 minutes and 15 seconds to complete their test.

Dog #1 Blue, our first competing dog came to the line at 7:27 am, and this started the 2020 NRC Championship.

Our re-birds and gun changes happened as follows...

Re-Bird after #11 at 8:28 am with dog #12 starting back at 8:31 am. Gun Change after #20 at 9:25 am, starting back with dog #21 at 9:31 am. 2nd Re-Bird after #33 at 10:52 am with dog #34 starting back at 10:54 am. 2nd Gun Change happened after #40 at 11:35 am with the dog #41 starting back up at 11:41 am.

It showed to be a tough day for the gunners as we had 12 no birds/ reruns. 

Dog #8 had a break, and there was a handle with dog #21.

The last dog #20 came to the line at 1:47 pm and was completed at 1:52 pm.

From the time the first running dog came to the line at 7:27 am until the last running dog finished test, this series took 6 hours 25 minutes. Which is approximately 6.5 minutes per dog.

Right Retired - Intent on the next bird, Rush locks on the area of the retired gun. He makes a quick correction when he get to the area and grabs his bird.

Long Middle Retired - Rush pulls right as he climbs the hill for the middle retired gun. After a significant effort he came up with the bird.

Right Retired - Patton went under that arc then stopped and turned. He then went back to the right, then turned left to go to his bird.

Long Middle Retired - He went out to the holding blind then made a circle. Going to the fall area of the bird he missed it. Patton hunted deep and wide but then came back to the blind for another circle and went out the bird.

Long Middle Retired - He moved quickly up the hill on the mowed strip. With a quick gust, Bullet gets a nose full of the bird and snaps it up and heads in.


 

1st Series - 2nd Gun Change & Weather Update

 Starting with the last gun change at 11:35 am, the wind has slowly picked up out of the east. This is pushing some of the dogs to the right on the long middle retired bird putting them on the wrong side of the guns. Most dogs quickly recover. 

The work on the right retired is still pretty much the same. A lot of dogs go under the arc of the bird. Some hunt deep before recovering and other just quickly adjust.

The temp is 77 degrees with sunny skies and the wind coming out of the east 5 - 8 mph.

We will be right back with dog # 41.
